An odd affection for old technology

I know that tapes never sounded that great, and polaroids always get fucked up in terms of exposure/ you can't reproduce them unless you scan them, but how will us lo-fi culture nuts survive when 2008 is up and cassettes and spectra film cease being manufactured?

Go Away

I will be away this coming Sunday, but that extra hour I doused you with last week should last you through til I'm back, nagging you to donate to my show for Fundrive the week following that. I have to raise $155 and thus far I have nothing to speak of.

Ryan will be doing my fill-in, accompanied by either Eric or Tucce, I'm not sure who will be inhabiting that body that day, you'll have to see (hear).

No I'm not going to Frog Eyes tonight. I will only see Frog Eyes in the autumn. Not the spring. I'm Victoria but I'm not that Victoria.

Playlists 08/02/17

Gumdrops and Lollipops began with a set about lions, riffed on Rivers Cuomo's "Superfriend" for awhile, and then got into some power pop for a bit. (Hey, what's with this new release from the Feminists, didn't they break up?)

young lions/ mary/ mary
the bee gees/ best of/ every christian lion hearted man will show you
the constantines/ shine a light/ young lions
rivers cuomo/ alone: the home recordings/ superfriend
snow fairies/ get married/ the life of a total square
superfriendz/ rescue us from boredom/ insecticide
the superfantastics/ pop-up book/ tonight tonite

the feminists/ can't scream loud enough/ the beginning of the world

Carload of Whatever mostly featured chart releases I hadn't probed yet. I also played some non-chart songs that hearken back to the early 1990s/ late 1980s. If you can ever get your hands on it, please read the back of Vampire Can Mating Oven. Burying master tapes for songs because you're worried about exposure to cosmic rays? Camper van Beethoven is so wacky...

x-tal/ die monster die/ steptford rockers
camper van beethoven/ vampire can mating oven/ heart
lightspeed chanpion/ falling of the lavendar bridge/ I could have done this myself
pants yell!/ alison statoon/ tried to be good
vampire weekend/ s/t/ mansard roof

chris walla/ field manual/ everyone needs a home

*For Cody, who didn't listen to Gimme Gimme Octopus or Gumdrops and Lollipops, and therefore felt out of the Superfriendz loop.

Playlist 08/02/10

Firstly, apologies to all who tried to listen to us via radio today; our transmitter was down due to what seemed to be a power outage at the university. I'm not sure if everything was up and running by the time Gumdrops and Lollipops began broadcasting, but maybe you listened online?

Theme: Love Songs
I am not sure how well I executed this theme; it is so broad. I tried to draw from both the sentimental and goofy departments, which resulted in this bizarre mix of emotion that left me not entirely satisfied. Still, I genuinely ♥♥♥ a lot of the songs featured on the show this week.

Camouflage Nights/ unreleased/ It Could Be Love
The Shangri-Las/ Leader of the Pack/ Out in the Streets
The Magnetic Fields/ Distortion/ Please Stop Dancing
The Magnetic Fields/ 69 Love Songs Vol. 2/ Papa Was a Rodeo
Leonard Cohen/ Songs of Love and Hate/ Famous Blue Raincoat
Jens Lekman and José Gonzalez covering the Songs:Ohia track "Being In Love" (live)*
The Beat Happening/ You Turn Me On/ You Turn Me On
Helen Love/ Bubblegum Killers EP/ Debbie Loves Joey
The Unloveables/ Crush Boyfriend Heartbreak/ Bein' In Love
Cars Can Be Blue/ All the Stuff We Do/ I Like
Casper & the Cookies/ The Optimist's Club/ Kiss a Friend
BMX Bandits/ Down at the Hop/ Love at the Hop

You can preview the rest of that Cars Can Be Blue album here. Some of the songs could get me kicked off air (eg. "Abortion"), and others would fit better on a sex-themed show ("Dirty Song"--sample lyrics: "You can eat me out/ With that dirty mouth/ Do it then get out"), so I didn't play them this week, and might never play them.

*The only things I know about indiepop I learn from a faraway friendly acquaintance of a close friend of mine, who listens and patiently (eagerly) corrects me everytime I leave out a fact, state something untrue, or brush over something he thinks is important for indiepop enthusiasts to know. Oh yeah, he also bought me a Lucksmiths t-shirt so I can maintain my status as indiepop poseur. But seriously. You'd be so misinformed if he wasn't around.

October 1993

An old friendly acquaintance contributes to Robot Blood, a blog about comics, sinful pleasures, and goofy songs. His conspirator, Simon, is finishing up this fantastic comic which takes place during the time of the Russian constitutional crisis.

Show 08/02/03

Don't even say it, oK? I know that the "mid-show slump" was more of a whole show slump. I liked some of the songs, but didn't think others were that special.

Special to me:
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone/ Young Shields/ When You Were Mine
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone/ Young Shields/ Roberta C.
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone/ Young Shields/ The Subway Home (version)
Tahiti 80/ Wallpaper for the Soul/ 1000 Times
Her Space Holiday/ The Young Machines/ Something to Do With My Hands
Scarboro Aquarium Club/ Poison/ Someone Else

Here is that music video I talked about, thanks Danny. It's pretty fun even if you think the band is over-hyped.

Corey W. Schmidt's radio show is actually on Mondays on CKMS, the University of Waterloo campus station. It is called "Central Services," and runs from 10am-noon EST.
