Tullycraft Likes Immaculate Machine

The Tullycraft blog is one of my favourite band blogs because more than being about the band's recording sessions/ cd releases/ tour dates, it has mp3s of Tullycraft covers and other songs the band likes. The other day, Sean wrote about Immaculate Machine!

Taking Back Sunday

or, My Mum is Not a New Age Flake Despite Her Current Reading Material
My mother is lying on the floor reading a self-help book, soaking up the last of the sunshine coming in through the window. It sets earlier these days, have you noticed. I really like the fog. Fog and sun in one day is the best weather.

I think I lost some listeners in my transition from Sunday afternoons to Tuesday nights. And now I'm going to lose people again?
Gumdrops and Lollipops will be airing from 3-4 PST beginning Sunday, September 16.
You should tune in not only for my show, but for all of Sunday afternoon. From 2-3 is Luis and Gimme Gimme Octopus, and the 4-5 slot is Ryan and Carload of Whatever, or Junk in the Trunk, as I am now affectionately going to refer to it. Do your homework, or your "Sunday surprise!" as my friend Emily likes to call those last-minute oh-shit kinds of papers/ readings. We will keep you company.

Recomiendo: Milky Wimpshake, cuddling, walking home from school with a friend, mint leaves and tomato, 'getting tested'

Concerts September 9-21 +special mention, bonus empty wit!

This is what I do when I'm not wandering around campus pretending to write about A.J.M. Smith's poem "The Lonely Land" in all the glory of its three published versions between 1926 and 1929: I turn into a shitty blogger with nothing to say but I say it anyway.

Friday September 14
Jolene Pollard, Brett Frankson
The Solstice Cafe
8-10pm, doors 7:30
Prolly pretty cute. Prolly pretty chill. Prolly you should go.

Friday, September 21
Away, Ri'o!, Germans, Beasts and Superbeasts
Logan's Pub
10:30, doors 9pm
Yo, resist the temptation to see the Next Big Things (Handsome Furs and Johnny and the Moon) and go to this shows because Germans are awesome. But maybe you've seen Beasts and Superbeasts recently enough, and you're not friends with Away, Ri'o! I don't even know what I'm going to do that night... Maybe I'll just hide and do neither.

Handsome Furs, Johnny and the Moon
Lucky Bar
9pm
Buy advance tickets at Ditch and drink a lot of beer beforehand and tell all those kids from your hometown that you saw them before they really blew up.

*Sunday October 7
The Weakerthans, The Last Town Chorus
Sugar
8pm
I should be more psyched on the Weakerthans, I just should be. I like them, I've just never taken the time to really get into them. I guess if I paid $20 for Holy Fuck, I can shell out for the Weakerthans and Last Town Chorus? I realize that what I've just said sounds terrible. But as much as I love seeing live music, one must be a little discriminating at times.

Right now I am really into Hormones in Abundance's song "Bad Songs, Bad People."

Renegade Radio Superstars

When Offbeat stopped publishing, a section of my internal organs died alongside its interviews with Sigur Ros and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the reviews written by radio hosts I'd idolized throughout junior high school.

Renegade Radio, in its quarters-folded format, soon replaced Offbeat, although when I say replaced, I mean only as the official CFUV publication. I missed the feel of Offbeat, the way you could actually turn its pages. Renegade seemed so... wimpy? Flimsy? Unsubstantial? Truthfully, the writing hadn't changed much. Its quality may even have improved in some cases (probably not). There were still reviews (although much fewer), and an interview here and there. I don't know if it was because I simply grew up a little and became disenchanted, but reading Renegade just didn't inspire me as much as reading Offbeat did.

Holding this month's Renegade Radio in my hands, in all of its six-page glory exclusive of front and back covers, I feel like my love of CFUV's written work has been restored. The cover is simple yet effective. The charts appear on page 1, where they should be (well, I think they're important). The program guide is colour-coded again. There is even a "Fun and Games" section on the back cover, complete with Immaculate Machine tour comic by former show host Brooke Gallupe, mix tape by Ming (♥♥♥ we'll miss you), and an Indie Rock Crossword you can have fun filling out with your nerdy friends. You can even read what Ryan wrote about Old Life Records. Woohoo! Go pick up a copy on campus or at Ditch ASAP.
