CFUV has been a parent to me. It raised me through my teen years by introducing me to inspiring people and all kinds of music unknown to my biological parents. It's been a best friend, and it's introduced me to many very good friends while it strengthened my relationship with friends I already had. I've been here for six years! The formative years of my life. CFUV has been so, so good to me. It has taught me so much. I hope that I gave a little bit back to it.

Here's the good news

Thank god. Why was everyone saying the Defektors were broken up in the first place, anyway? I want them to come to Victoria so bad. I would even break out of my self-imposed show-booking hiatus to put on a show for Defektors, if they would only take me up on the offer.

Speaking of bands that Jeremiah Haywood plays in, Twin Crystals were great last night. Packed--like kippers in a wartime tin can--in Duncan's bunker of a basement (bodies floor to ceiling/ little to no head room/ air heavy with animal oils--sweat), most people could barely see a thing, but it was still pretttttttty good. Listened to them again while standing in line at Lucky Bar two hours later. According to Johnnie Regalado, in a spectacular climax, the Crystal's gear broke on stage, they tried to fix it while finishing the song, and then fucked it all, announcing they were "done" and leaving the stage. I have been listening to the record all morning.

...which means fall has finally arrived. I am very sad to see a wonderful summer come to an end, but I'm beginning to get excited about scarves, seriously hitting the books, and traveling to New York and Toronto.

Emma Cochrane, our well-traveled and highly intelligent Women's Radio Collective Coordinator, will be filling in for me on G&L this Sunday July 19th.

Please stay tuned to the program following my regular slot, as it will be Ryan Ferko's last episode of Carload of Whatever.

I said a sort of farewell on the air last week, but I would like to reiterate my sentiments dans le blog: the Ferks is the story I will tell my grandchildren some day.

Reasons:
1) Witnessing a 3 year evolution of Carloads from its first day until its second-to-last.
2) The Bicycles show in a courtroom in the old provincial courthouse aka the Maritime Museum of British Columbia.
3) Andrea & Ryan Presents... in general. I am happy that every show was all-ages, and that we found some new venues. Lots of stress was mixed in with the fun, but I think we learned a lot.
4) Visiting Mississauga/ Toronto and staying at la maison de Ferko on a murphy bed. Ryan driving the red Durango. The largest church garage sale in southern Ontario.
5) Witnessing the early days of Old Life from the outside. In particular this priceless interview. So good on both sides of the equation.
6) Ryan + beerz + Pit

Thanks My Friend Wallis and Almonds, Cohen for dropping by the station and doing a live studio session with us! It was a lot of fun, and I think it sounded great. Hopefully, the complete studio sessions and interviews will be uploaded to the UVic website as a podcast later this month. Perhaps you will also be able to hear this edition of Sunday Surprise on campus stations across the country if we decide to share the show with them. Thanks Donald from CFUV program We Are Ugly but We Have the Music and the now famous Burger Blog for providing extra production support.

I should also review the Pterodactyl Sneak Attack Productions show since I'm blogging about Sunday already. Iji (Seattle) and Watercolor Paintings (Santa Barbara) visited the island and joined Almonds, Cohen and Ruthie and Winfield for a show at the Bayanihan Centre. Ruthie and Winfield played really well, despite their lack of violin. I actually liked the synth substitute--you folks should keep it! Pick up their new CD, Rough Bubba Trauna; it looks and sounds awesome. Watercolor Paintings gave us the first non-picnic sit-down set Victoria has seen for awhile. (I can't remember sitting down since Second Story or old Fifty-Fifty days, but perhaps that's just because I never actually sit down at shows anymore because I'm always running around getting stressed out or feeding off of Cody's stress.) I thought they were pretty good, but I was a little surprised that I wasn't more into it. A few years ago, I might have been absolutely thrilled that Rebecca and her brother Josh--that guy with the familiar face and radio show--were here in Victoria; however, 2008 brought me so many bands that are ripping off the C86 cute-but-still-with-a-punk-rock-edge thing (which I like way more) that I haven't felt a need to listen to stuff that's only cute without being particularly witty or snarky to get my pop fix. In this way, Watercolor Paintings felt like a blast from my personal musicology past. Still, how can you really go wrong with a brother-sister band that plays baritone ukulele and celtic harp? Iji was fun, but really loud, and the group screaming ("aah!") was a little brusque after the gentle Watercolor Paintings. The singer actually has a really sweet indiepop voice, though, and I'm glad they rocked out a little. This band also featured some indie pop celebrities: Chris from Indiepages, who was wearing an Eric's Trip shirt chosen specially for his visit to Canada I'm sure, and Jon Manning of Lost Sound Tapes. I don't feel like I can properly comment on Almonds, Cohen, because I hear them jamming so often in my living room. Largely, this concert was a huge geekfest--a comforting, DIY geekfest. Lost Sound Tapes had all their merchandise for sale, including the Endless Bummer's Donald Fagen Mix Tape.

It was a busy Sunday, a busy weekend, and a busy week. So it's no surprise that I'm sick now, but getting better. Also, the eczema on my hands is flaring up, so I just swallowed a spoonful of hemp oil because it's supposed to help my cell membranes or something? Eugh. Swallowing oil feels so gross...

Sunday, July 5th Gumdrops & Lollipops and Carload of Whatever are hosting two bands: My Friend Wallis (Crystal who also plays in Vincat) and Almonds, Cohen (Brock who also plays in Colourbook/ 'It It). We hope it will be a blast--and how could it not be? Be sure to tune in for the full three hours of Sunday Surprise from 2-5pm PST.

My Friend Wallis will be promoting a newly released CD. You can catch Crystal and friends live and in-person tomorrow at 9pm at the opening of Studio 16 (the otherwise nameless place beneath Studio 16 1/2 in Fan Tan Alley). Old Life kidz 'It It will also be playing, as will Himalayan Bear. And you can see some nice art on the walls--cause it's a gallery, after all.

Almonds, Cohen plays a concert following their radio performance at the Bayanihan Centre on Blanshard near Fisgard. Iji and Watercolor Paintings--two American bands who nearly played here last year--will share their cute lo-fi sounds. David B (Boffa, not Barclay, but maybe Barclay too?) is a fan, and you should trust his taste. It's an all-ages, Sunday show, so you'd best arrive promptly at 7pm. One of the last Almonds, Cohen performances before Brock moves to Toronto!

A sad message to all our friends

Dear Friends,

There's no easy way to put this, so please accept our apologies for the seemingly abrupt nature of this post. We are saddened to announce that after sixteen years as The Lucksmiths, the band has decided to break up.

The last few years have been an uphill battle in many ways, so this isn't a hasty decision based on any falling-out between band members, but rather, an acceptance of the inevitable. This decision was finally reached a few months back, so we've had plenty of time to let it sink in.

We had tried to operate the band in a way that would suit all of us, but at the same time we've been very conscious that too much compromise would in the end affect our creative output. We're very proud of the music we make, and we certainly didn't want it to start stinking. So, in taking our cues from Devo, we've decided to whip the proverbial cream before it sits out too long.

We're really excited about our upcoming European tour, and have booked some Australian dates for our "farewell tour" in August. The details for these shows are in our gig guide. We really hope to see as many people at these shows as possible, as we will be playing super long sets, cramming in as many old favourites as possible.

We must apologise for not making it back to the USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand or Singapore, or to the other amazing European countries we've previously visited — and for never having made it to the other fifty or so countries we'd hoped to tour one day.

We really want to thank you all, especially the wonderful people who've helped us out in any way, and anyone who's listened to our music or come to a show. We've loved having you in our world and we will miss you dearly.

Live Shows Update

I recently posted excited announcements about the upcoming Brickyard shows featuring White Lung and Petroleum By-Products. Unfortunately, both of these shows (and all shows at the Brickyard) have been cancelled due to venue licensing problems and neighbour complaints. The Brickyard was a fun, central albeit cramped, narrow, sweaty, claustrophobic venue whose tiny back room permitted only a handful of people to actually watch bands who were performing. Although the venue wasn't ideal, it worked well enough--especially when it allowed the under-19 set to watch its concerts.

Camas Book & Infoshop, also known as "the anarchist bookstore" at the corner of Quadra and Kings, has also been barred from hosting all-ages concerts from May 15 onwards. I feel particularly saddened by this closure; Ryan, Cody, Troy, Tyler, myself and many other people organized so many memorable shows at that space. I really thought that the Camas crew had finally found a way to make an all-ages venue work--bookstore and workshop space by day/ venue by night, volunteer-run, inclusive, well-loved and well-used by numerous music and activist communities. From my understanding, Camas does not violate by-laws; however, the zoning of its building does not permit live shows. Two years is a good run for an all-ages space (unfortunately), but the way Camas functioned in a seemingly more sustainable, less covert way gave me false hope that Victoria might actually have a lasting all-ages venue. Go to the Famines/ B-Lines show tonight (8pm), because there won't be many Camas shows left. Show your support for the venue/ bookstore/ home base at Quadra Village Day next Saturday (May 9) where Old Life bands will be playing.

What now? We've collectively ended our grace period at Cornerstone Christian Fellowship (you can only get away with loud rock music and people--however subtley--drinking alcohol for so long a residential church that holds AA meetings and houses a pre-school), so that all-ages space is now out of the picture except for quiet, seated shows on Saturday nights only (their youth group now meets on Friday nights). We are now left with the Bayanihan Centre, the (costly) Sunset Room, and the (small, joyfully illegal, enthusiastic, cigarette-fumey) Fifty-Fifty Arts Collective. Community halls and churches are less than ideal for all-ages community organizers because their function in a given music scene is often fleeting and temporal, while artist-run spaces like the Fifty-Fifty--who supports and participates in all-ages events--must maintain a certain level of exclusivity and secrecy in order to go undetected by by-law enforcement officers, fire marshalls, and police.

I really believe in all-ages shows. They kept me sane, out of trouble, and engaged in some sort of community when I was a teenager, and they have allowed many bands who aren't suited to bar venues to play to audiences. Victoria should have a sustainable, affordable, legal all-ages venue, but like many other cities, we don't have one--yet.

SF Popfest lineup announced!!!

OMG - the return of SF Popfest! And they're not holding back either. I've boldfaced the bands I'm particularly excited about. I don't know if I'll be able to go... But I would really like to. In any case, it means that SKWBN and My Teenage Stride will be on this continent and on this coast, which can only mean good things in my books. Maybe I will try to get them to play up here!

As the more eagle-eyed of you have already noticed, The Rickshaw Stop has posted listings for the SF Popfest 2009 - it's true, we're excited about reviving the popfest tradition in the SF Bay Area, and we thought we'd post the lineup (so far) to the list as well.

The Popfest runs from May 21-24 and is at The Rickshaw Stop, Annie's Social Club and the Café du Nord. We're just posting the Rickshaw lineups right now, but stay tuned for Friday and Sunday lineups soon!

Where was this list when I was in HK?!

I tried to find a record store where I could purchase some Pancakes/ My Little Airport/ other Chinese pop CDs when I was in HK three years ago, but my search proved unsuccessful. All I could find was stores that sold bootlegs or stores that only sold Chinese mega-popstar boyband kinds of singers. I wasn't there for very long (only a week), so that may have been part of the problem - not enough time in such a big city.

Thankfully, the Marshmallow Kisses have provided us with a list of all the HK record stores where you can find their records! Go see it here.

Cat Poem - Christopher Smart

Firstly, this poem was written by an eccentric man who was forced to leave his position at Cambridge because he chose to marry. He was in and out of mad houses and debtors prisons throughout much of his subsequent life.

Secondly, spelling perfectly ordinary names like "Geoffrey" as "Jeoffry" and then bestowing this name upon your cat seems very 1980s upon first consideration, but think again - Christopher Smart gave this name to his cat in the eighteenth century. At least he didn't give this name to his son. I recall the unfortunately named Qristina from my high school days.

Thirdly, the thought of having one's throat bitten by a rat sounds very unpleasant.

Andrea & Ryan's 10th live all-ages show

No, "live all-ages show" does not mean a live broadcast. All of our broadcasts are all-ages; well, some are more so than others. Sometimes the songs we play have some cursing in them. Sometimes they're loud and grindy, or simply "too mod" (says my Grandma) for all ages of ears. In any case, this is Andrea & Ryan's 10th show as promoters.

We're particularly excited because The Bicycles - for whom we first produced a show - are returning to Victoria just in time to be our 10th as well.

Naturally, because this show is on a Sunday, we're hosting the three out of town bands on Sunday Surprise during our regular show times. Sunday Surprise (or SunDIY/ sINDIy Surprise, says David) includes Gimme Gimme Octopus (with Louis Yu), Gumdrops & Lollipops (with me) and Carload of Whatever (with Ryan Ferk-face). Collectively, we broadcast Sundays from 2-5pm PST. Listen in to hear interviews, hang-times, tour stories, and possibly some acoustic sets with the Bicycles, Hot Panda, and Prairie Cat.

The Secret World of Animals is Vincat's Crystal. While she isn't coming to our radio shows - we'll spare her the sweaty on-air booth this time around - she will be playing a lovely solo set to open the concert.

1 & 2. Ryan of Carload of Whatever is filling in for me on Sunday. I will be leading a conference for middle school aged youth that I've been helping to plan for the past year. I can't wait: while I will be missing out on valuable essay-writing time, a quiz, and what is sure to be a great concert with ESL, Stefana Fratila, Almonds,Cohen (+ loverboy), and Macadamia Brothers in Vancouver (see details below), I will be spending a weekend in crisp, dry, autumnal Okanagan weather, spending time with old friends, and meeting a new generation of teenagers. Yessss.

The Anacortes Story
This weekend, I spent 16 hours in Anacortes, WA. I travelled there by ferry and single-gear bike (no, not fixed gear, just broken 5-speed). I didn't see any local rockstars but I did see Parenthetical Girls. There were maybe 10 of us at the Department of Safety, besides people who live there/ operate the space/ were in bands playing that night. There were also 10-15 people from Zac Pennington's extended family. Needless to say, the presence of a drunk family of people wearing yellow-sleeved "Team Zac" shirts designed specially for this occasion made for a rowdy and, well, interesting show. Highlights included Zac's grandmother doing a song and dance routine which she apparently performs every Christmas. It involved lifting the knees and singing something I couldn't quite make out. Parenthetical Grrrls were great. I haven't been sure of what to make of the new album, but this show reminded me of why I liked the Grrrls to begin with. Other highlights of the trip included neither Cody nor I being ID'ed even though we are regularly asked for identification when buying liquor at home, where the drinking age is two years earlier. We also ate large burgers and passable fries, drank American beer, and visited the Donut House for some gigantic pieces of fried dough that we couldn't even think about finishing. After all that grease, it's almost a good thing we didn't get to partake of our motel's complimentary Dutch breakfast which, if their complimentary tea selection was any indication, was probably quite good. The reason why we weren't able to eat breakfast? We were biking to beat the sun to the ferry terminal.

I honestly don't think that Christopher is ill-intentioned, or that he has made more than $10 off these bands (which, I assume, instantly gets put back into postal costs). He sent my radio station CDs for free. He seems young, and perhaps he just doesn't have a full grasp on how promotions in the music industry work. I don't think he knows what bands expect of him. Although Roque has accused him in a pretty aggressive manner, I think it's important for someone to tell Christopher that what he is doing is not cool if that's what they think.

Rob is doing a really emotional show dedicated to one of Victoria's big ska scene founders, Matt Bishop. Matt was a lifeguard at the camp I attended and later volunteered at. As I recall, he died in a tragic rock climbing accident. He lost his life saving friends of his.

Tired of the same-old

Same old blahg. Same old radio show. I am tired of them. I am excited for Ryan to come back so that my show will again be only an hour - the extra 30 minutes dilutes my content.

Maybe I'll make my posts here more fun, too. You know, write about my favourite children's television shows etc. so that you can collect them like the fangirls and fanboys you are. I'm not tired of writing about music. I would just like some freedom to branch out.

So. Here are two recipes that I am making Cody try out tonight (unless he wants to try something else in which case I'll comply because I was mean to him last night):

Watermelon Granita

Ingredients:1/2 cup water, 1 cup sugar, Juice of two limes, 6 cups of cubed watermelon and 1/4 cup of vodka.
Steps: Make a syrup of the water and sugar-let cool
Puree the watermelon, mix with the syrup, lime juice, and vodka
Place in a flat container to freeze
Stir the granita with a fork as it freezes
Fluff the granita with a fork before serving

Thank you David B for sending me that Endless Bummer cd! Best week to receive mail; I was soooo burried under papers (still am). Young Lions will be releasing a 7" some day. The Blow tickets went with little prodding; I have made up my mind that I am going to that show, as no studying will help me by that time of night.

I received the Tullycraft cd from Tim last night when we were hanging with indiepop internet friends from San Francisco and Seattle. More on that next week. The Salteens song went out to Andrew because although the Zombies are great picnic music, he was wishing for "Kelly Nicoll".

The book set was an attempt to make myself like books again despite wanting to hate them due to papers/ not getting a certain job I wanted. I don't know how I feel about books. I'm conflicted. I like them, but parts of my life are trying to convince me otherwise.

Today's show was really really fun for me. Firstly, I got to do the friends-across-Canada hug-from-coast-to-coast thing by playing all that Haligonian stuff. (No one called to tell me about the Coast/ Brent Randall/ Vincat/ BA Johnston show, so I'm guessing no one went, which is unfortunate.)

I also reminded you why this show's genre is "twee/ indiepop/ fun" by playing Tullycraft, Dorotea, Blue Clocks Green, and AGSFB. That wasn't why I played those songs, though -- I actually just found this mix from my friend Timothy and got really excited to hear the songs on it again. I always lose Let's Rip off These Bands... and Marvel at the Untouchable Beauty of Others because it's one of my favourite mixes ever.

Everytime I play Gaiety I wonder why I don't listen to the Doers more often. I can't see them this week because I have an exam the next morning. It sucks. Like, I get to see Julie and the Superfantastics, but I also have to miss the Blow/ Colourbook show... What is this?! Exams are ruining my cultural experience. (And school is ruining my creative life -- what else is new?)

That JR cover I played really captures the spirit of the song. You know who else covers JR? Jens, of course. Anyways who does Jonathan better than the man himself? That new Jonathan Richman release is sexy and coy and playful and fun, but what else would you expect, really... Too bad he's not even touching the west coast on his tour.

Something I wanted to say on air but couldn't: everytime I hear Woodhands, it makes me orgasm. Therefore, Ryan and I are going to Vancouver next weekend. Ryan is playing his interview with Bob Wiseman. It's really funny how Bob just called Feist a "big machine" regarding her popularity. Later Now he's playing the Werbster (Woodhands) and I'm feeling nostalgic.

I came to the station with nothing in hand and barely a plan twenty minutes before show time because I have been writing a paper which is due tomorrow. It's that time of year. I can't wait for summer when I can devote more time to progamming, maybe getting together some some spoken word of indiepop/ DIY interest, maybe some interviews and some guests and themes.

Anyway, the Endless Bummer songs can be found on David Barclay's website. I disagree with Lenin I Shumov's remark that "there is no love," although it is appealingly tragic to think so. I guess it's just his Soviet childhood in Minsk coming through. I want to promise that I will never play "Whatcha Doin'" again, but I think that that's a dangerous promise to make. The singer from Velocity Girl has a voice that really bugs me sometimes; I like the way the Icicles have taken the same power pop vocal style yet somehow they make it so much better. "Too Much, Too Drunk" is what happens when people overindulge in sex and alcohol, but not in that order.

Larry just got here; he recently saw Jens Lekman in Seattle. I wonder how that makes me feel.

Today I went digging in the vinyl stacks for my favourite kind of music -- late seventies, eighties, and early nineties pop! Can you believe CFUV has two Housemartins albums? Shop Assistants? The self-titled Pastels? Thank god they haven't been stolen, as the s/t Mudhoney had been. My further forays into Rivers Cuomo's home solo recordings proved an unexpected delight. (If I had thought at all, I would have expected it, considering I ♥♥♥ older Weezer.) Paul Simon made his first (his only?) appearance on the show today. Sunday Surprise sat in a hot on-air booth smelling the heating latex of pink and purple balloons left over from a very successful Women's Radiothon last Friday.

That's kind of what CFUV is doing right now, except that we have, at most, two people answering phones and we only do this once a year, not once every month. We're a non-commercial station so we gots to do it.

Theme: Love Songs
I am not sure how well I executed this theme; it is so broad. I tried to draw from both the sentimental and goofy departments, which resulted in this bizarre mix of emotion that left me not entirely satisfied. Still, I genuinely ♥♥♥ a lot of the songs featured on the show this week.

You can preview the rest of that Cars Can Be Blue album here. Some of the songs could get me kicked off air (eg. "Abortion"), and others would fit better on a sex-themed show ("Dirty Song"--sample lyrics: "You can eat me out/ With that dirty mouth/ Do it then get out"), so I didn't play them this week, and might never play them.

*The only things I know about indiepop I learn from a faraway friendly acquaintance of a close friend of mine, who listens and patiently (eagerly) corrects me everytime I leave out a fact, state something untrue, or brush over something he thinks is important for indiepop enthusiasts to know. Oh yeah, he also bought me a Lucksmiths t-shirt so I can maintain my status as indiepop poseur. But seriously. You'd be so misinformed if he wasn't around.
